UK Taxi Drivers Called It: Why Skoda Superb Estate Keeps Winning Awards

For all the new models, innovative technology and fresh concepts emerging from the automotive industry over the past few years, the Skoda Superb Estate proves that sometimes the simplest ideas can be the most enduring.

Just ask leading automotive publication Auto Express, which has just branded the Superb Estate as its Estate Car of the Year for the third consecutive year – it is the sixth time the spacious load lugger has won the prize now.

It isn’t hard to understand why, either. While estates as a format have steadily fallen out of fashion in line with the rise of SUVs, you’re still hard pressed to find cars that pack as much outright space and practicality into a car-like package.

With this in mind, the Superb Estate fulfils its brief, well, superbly, eschewing the trend of those that sacrifice space in favour of a more dynamic look.

Which is ironic, because the Superb Estate is still a very handsome looker even with all that space at the rear, the Czechia marque’s familiar family face and understated handsome form suiting the booted look enough to earn admiring glances.

With 690-litres of boot space, it is hard to fault the Skoda Superb Estate for outright practicality, more so when you consider you can drop the rear seats to swell that to a mammoth 1,920-litres.

It is a model that has, over the years, found favour with taxi drivers. This shouldn’t be a surprise.

A successful taxi is often required to the basics very well – it should be refined, spacious, practical, comfortable and good value, traits that have been apparent since the Skoda Superb Estate first appeared back in 2008.

Since then, the model has evolved and matured, holding its ground as other manufacturers dropped estates in favour of SUVs.

It’s not just the Superb Estate’s specific features that have made it popular, however.

You don’t need to be a taxi driver to know Skoda has been the private hire car of choice for most over the years on the strength of the firm’s excellent reputation for build quality and reliability.

Then there are the ‘Simply Clever’ touches such as the umbrella in the door, the hooks that hold shopping in place and the Smart Dials that provide an ergonomic middle ground between tactile controls and touchscreen grandeur.

So, while SUVs may be strong in quantity for taxi drivers considering their next model, it is worth considering the quality that exists from those that appeal to a more traditional audience.
