Skoda Octavia Taxi Review: Why Enduring Taxi Favourite is Better Than Ever

There is a good argument for suggesting the Skoda Octavia is all the car you could ever need, which goes a long way to explaining why it has been a firm favourite among taxi drivers for decades now.
Roll back around 30 years and the launch of the first modern day generation of the Octavia was a major turning point for the Czechia manufacturer.
Based on the Volkswagen Golf, Skoda utilised its versatility to deliver a larger interpretation of the hatchback formula, complete with a fastback design that offered huge legroom and boot space.
The formula proved an instant success, and the Octavia has gone on to become Skoda’s best-selling model across Europe every year since.
Since then, not only has Skoda retained its commitment to maximising practicality into a pseudo-family car package, the Octavia has also evolved in terms of quality, style and driving manners. Better yet, Skoda’s record for reliability and customer service ranks among the best out there.

2026 Skoda Octavia Taxi: Practicality & Interior Space
Ask any taxi driver that runs a Skoda Octavia for their private business what they like most about their car and there will likely be a universal response: practicality.
Indeed, the Octavia has been putting outright space at the forefront of the car’s appeal ever since the first-generation model hit the road and the latest model is roomier than ever.
Better yet, the latest Octavia continues its tradition of being offered in both hatchback and estate body styles, both of which provide immense boot space.
Though the standard model has the look of a saloon, the whole tailgate lifts to make it a hatchback, which allows better access to the cavernous 600-litre space. Drop the seats and this rises to 1,555-litres.
Choose the Skoda Octavia Estate [pictured above] and boot space swells to 640-litres, or 1,700-litres with the rear seats folded.
Generous space isn’t just reserved for the boot area either with the Octavia offering excellent head and legroom for passengers in the back, while in the tradition of Skoda’s ‘Simply Clever’ slogan, there are myriad smart touches that go a long way.
In the boot, these include shopping bag hooks, moveable cargo elements to help items remain in place and under-floor storage compartments.
In the rear compartment, you can specify headrests that adjust at the side to allow passengers to sleep without they’re head swaying, while there are also tiered seatback pouches to hold items like smartphones.
Then there is of course the familiar Skoda favourites, including the umbrella tucked into the driver’s door panel, an ice scraper in the fuel filler cap and a clip on the driver’s side windscreen to display parking tickets.
Because it’s the little things that count, after all...

2026 Skoda Octavia Taxi: Interior & Comfort
In a world of minimalist, screen-heavy interiors, the conventionality of the Skoda Octavia's interior is something of a tonic.
That’s not to say it doesn’t have a technological edge, as demonstrated by a large 13-inch touchscreen that now dominates the display.
It’s well-positioned, sitting on a shelf that juts out towards the driver that also includes several of the key controls, while it is compliant with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The Virtual Cockpit is another smart touch, proving easy on the eyes and simple to read, while throwing up all the key information you need direct to your line of sight.
Most impressive is the quality of the materials with everything feeling well screwed together, while the touch points are of a premium standard, especially if you specify the upholstered dashboard.
That will come depending on which interior package you opt for; Studio, Loft, Lounge, Suite Black and Cognac, each with varying degrees of plush fabrics and materials.
It’s all very understated, hard-wearing and logical – the perfect combination for taxi drivers who spend a lot of their time behind the wheel.

2026 Skoda Octavia Taxi: Performance & Running Costs
On the road, the Skoda Octavia puts a greater emphasis on comfort than handling agility, but it’s a set-up that’ll be appreciated by your fares as it ensures a refined and smooth experience in the rear.
Even so, handling and road holding is precise and reassuring, making the Octavia a doddle to drive in urban lanes despite its size.
That said, it is on the motorway where the Octavia feels most at home, the hushed driving experience and cossetting ride munching the miles effortlessly.
Under the bonnet, the Octavia gets a choice of either petrol or diesel engines.
At the entry point is a 116bhp 1.5-litre petrol engine, which is available in standard configuration or as a mild hybrid. Whichever is chosen, each is capable of exceeding 50mpg.
There is also a more potent 150bhp version of the same engine – again available with mild hybrid technology – which delivers similarly impressive fuel economy and CO2 emission figures.
While diesels have fallen out of favour in recent years, the Octavia remains one of a select band of cars that still drink from the black pump.
From a fuel economy perspective, the Octavia’s 2.0-litre TDI (116bhp or 150bhp) delivers superior figures of over 60mpg, while the Volkswagen-sourced engine is refined and pulls well through the gears of a manual or DSG automatic transmission.
At the upper end of the range is the vRS, which is less likely to be favoured by taxi drivers, but if you do want to give your fares an eye-popping sporty experience on the road, its 265bhp petrol engine will hit 0-62mph in just 6.5secs.

2026 Skoda Octavia Taxi – The Verdict
The Skoda Octavia's conventionality might seem somewhat analogue in a modern world of EVs and SUVs, but then that is entirely at the heart of its immense appeal.
Indeed, the Octavia’s enduring popularity among taxi drivers shows how the model gets the basics spot on in terms of practicality, refinement, quality and fuel economy.
Even if other dearly departed family car-sized models like the Ford Mondeo et al. had not fallen by the wayside, they’d struggle to compete with the Octavia’s vast boot and cabin space, while it is no exaggeration to suggest that Skoda can compete with the likes of Audi and BMW when it comes to build quality and premium materials.
Indeed, if you’re a taxi driver in the market for a new car and you haven’t owned a Skoda Octavia before, it’s worth taking a moment to consider why so many of your peers choose this model each and every time.
