Where is the Best Place to get a Taxi in the UK?

With the current shortages of cab drivers in the UK, everyone has experienced the journey delays and price hikes that are becoming more commonplace across the country.

Here at The Taxi Centre, we wanted to delve deeper into the specific regions of the UK that are most likely to be affected by these shortages. That’s why we researched the amount of independent taxi companies in 89 counties across the country, finding the locations with the most and least number of cab services per population.

Which is the worst region to get a taxi in the UK?

Our research found that the North East of England has the biggest shortage of taxi services per population. On average, each independent taxi company has to service 3,622 people, meaning there is higher competition for bookings.
For comparison, taxi companies in Wales only have to service 1,480 people on average. This means Welsh residents are 59% more likely to be able to get a taxi on time than those who live in the North East.

The West Midlands also has a notable shortage of taxi companies with a ratio of 3,598 people per taxi service.

Where is the worst county to get a taxi in the UK?

When we localised our analysis, we found that Lanarkshire in Scotland is the worst-serviced for independent cab companies in the UK. The central lowlands county has an extremely high people per taxi service ratio, with one cab company for every 7,467 people.

Other notable inclusions were Renfrewshire, Sutherland and Dunbartonshire, all located in Scotland. The independent taxi companies in each of these counties need to service at least 5,000 people on average.

Where is the best county to get a taxi in the UK?

It’s not all bad news for Scots though. Our research also revealed that Scotland is home to the best serviced county in the UK.

Cromartyshire taxi companies only have to service 71 people on average. That means you are 99% more likely to be able to book a cab in the highlands of Cromartyshire than you are in Lanarkshire.

In fact, Scotland makes up 70% of the top 10 counties for taxi services, with Nairnshire, Buteshire, Selkirkshire, Morayshire, Caithness and Shetland all joining Cromartyshire on the list.
