Cambridge to Get Electric Only Taxi Ranks

Cambridge could be in line to become one of the first cities in the UK to offer electric only taxi ranks, after a new report suggested they could have a positive effect on air quality throughout the city. The idea is the latest in a series of efforts by Cambridge City Council to encourage the use of low emission taxis, something that local authorities in the UK are increasingly prioritising.

Alongside potentially implementing electric only taxi ranks, another plan suggests providing a number of taxi-only vehicle charging points throughout the city.

However, before taking steps to implement any plans, council officials are set to meet with drivers throughout the city to see what could be used as an incentive to switch to more environmentally friendly vehicles.

Cambridge’s executive councillor for environment and waste said “Low emission taxis have the benefit of being both less polluting and having lower operating costs, so it is right that we should look at ways to incentivise their take-up by the taxi trade. A shift towards low emission taxis… forms an important part of our plan to improve air quality in parts of the city dominated by buses, taxis and service vehicles.”

The plans echo similar suggestions from other locations throughout the UK, and come shortly after the news that new fines and taxi legislation will be implemented in London’s most polluted areas.
