London to Get 100 New Taxi Ranks

London’s mayor, Sadiq Khan, has announced new plans to build 100 new taxi ranks across London.

Khan’s plans will increase London’s total taxi ranks from 500 to 600 over the next four years. Additionally, an extra 20 bus lanes will be opened up for cabbies to use. Khan has also stated his intention for the London-centric test cab drivers must pass, ‘The Knowledge’, to be accredited as a formal qualification, which could enable successful applicants to apply for study loans.

Transport for London is set to feature key taxi info on its website by 2017, factoring this information into online journey planners. Further, in 2017, grants of up to £5000 will be awarded to black cab drivers who scrap the oldest and most environmentally-unfriendly of their taxis.

Mr Khan said: "Our new taxi and private hire action plan will help us deliver a truly world-class service for Londoners and create a vibrant taxi and private hire market where all providers can continue to flourish.”
