We love the Skoda Octavia - here's why
Each year, new cars arrive on our radar and capture the imagination of the country’s taxi industry, whether it’s a brand new model, or a classic with a major new lease of life.
With that said, there are also many cars that have been popular favourites for years and years, and are likely to retain that status for a long time to come.
One of the best examples of this that we can think of is the iconic Škoda Octavia. And here’s why.
Twenty years of industry quality
The first Škoda Octavias arrived on the UK’s roads in 1998, and quickly became a hugely popular hit with private hire operators and taxi drivers. Primarily, this was because the vehicle gained considerable acclaim in the public eye as a low cost yet premium automobile, combining best-in-class and ultra-robust engineering with quality interior refinement and highly affordable running costs.
Since then, the car’s received more than its fair share of upgrades and facelifts by the Czech automaker, though its quality and consistency has never wavered. If anything, they’ve consistently developed the vehicle into a leader in both the UK taxi industry and regular civilian use. And for their fine work, the latest model received the accolade of the ‘What Car? Family Car of the Year’, a testament to its status as a best-in-class choice.
Sophisticated yet powerful
The Octavia’s always been a vehicle that’s pretty on the eye, with Škoda creating a car that passengers have simply loved to be driven by. And over the years, refinement has ranked highly on the manufacturer’s agenda, with a series of facelifts and redesigns creating a car that’s always been a leader in both look and feel.
The newest model ranks among the best-looking cars that Škoda has made, and the finest cars on the road today. Its bodywork is sculpted stylishly, with a blend of bold angles and smooth curves that help the car shine with elegance and flair. Meanwhile, split headlights add a dramatic edge, with a panoramic sunroof letting you stay as cool as you look – especially in the good weather.
With that said, this isn’t a car lacking on power or bite. To the contrary, performance is excellent across the range of engine options available. Although the entry-level 1.0 litre engine is more than impressive, taxi drivers may look to consider more powerful options, which will make driving a breeze no matter the luggage or number of passengers you’re carrying.
Comfort and polish for drivers and passengers alike
Škoda has never been one to cut corners with interior polish and trim. Ever since it first arrived on our roads, it’s been a highly comfortable choice for drivers and passengers alike.
However, the newest Octavia takes Škoda’s attention to detail to the next level. It’s one of the roomiest cars available, for passengers to stretch out while on the ride and offers more storage than many of its competitors. All materials are premium and of the highest quality, so that it looks and feels great to be driven in. And small touches leave lasting impressions, from the double-sided boot floor (letting you use either a mat or rubber surface to minimise dirt), to the umbrella holder beneath the passenger seat (for those rainy days that we’re so often unprepared for).
Škoda’s also added in all the technological innovation you could ask for. This includes practical additions like a heated windscreen to connectivity options such as USB ports throughout the vehicle.
Overall, it is quality throughout the vehicle – from front to back, outside and in – that makes the Octavia one that’s hard to look past. It’s just as difficult to find a car that performs so well at such an excellent price – putting a smile on your face behind the wheel, and keeping your money in the bank!
