    Uber Set to Allow Tipping

Uber will soon allow passengers to tip drivers within its app, as part of a number of reforms set to improve the company's relationship with drivers.

The company has adopted a no-tipping policy since launching in 2011, stating that the stance helped to make the Uber app “hassle free”, and that it was “better for riders and drivers to know for sure what they would pay or earn on each trip”. However, the policy has been consistently unpopular with drivers and passengers alike, particularly in the US where a culture of tipping is well established.

The decision to reverse the policy appears to have been taken soon after the resignation of longstanding CEO Travis Kalanick, and comes as the company looks to reform its image as part of “180 days of change”. In a blog post on the Uber website, the company states that a number of amendments to working culture are being made as part of a “company wide effort to meaningfully fix and improve the driving experience.”

Tipping is set to roll out throughout the US in July, after initial tests took place last month in Seattle, Minneapolis and Houston. However, no statement appears to have been made on introducing tipping to the UK, and it’s unclear whether the change will receive a full rollout worldwide or be restricted to the US alone.
